The Loss of Brian Mulroney

Updated: Jun 19, 2024

The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister and one of the greatest in the nation's history, passed away last night. On February 29th, Caroline Mulroney, an Ontario Cabinet Minister, tweeted that her father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, had passed away surrounded by family. Mulroney had been battling cancer.

In the hearts of Canadians, he held a special place. He was a political giant, and his legacy is one that all politicians across the country can admire. Not only did he bring free trade, allowing Canada and the United States to become closer allies, but he also allowed Canada to become a trillion-dollar economy. However, his work does not stop with economics. He was also a climate activist, banning a chemical that caused acid rain. Regardless of party lines, almost all agree that Mulroney's achievements in office are some of the greatest in Canadian history. Prime Minister Mulroney was also a great statesman; as Prime Minister, he lobbied Commonwealth nations to support Nelson Mandela and freedom.

Like almost any other Prime Minister, he too had some shortcomings, but almost all agree that they do not take away from what he contributed to Canada. Brian Mulroney, one of the greatest Prime Ministers in Canadian history, has shaped this country unlike any other. Politicians from all sides of the spectrum agree that Canada and Canadian politics will not be the same without him. The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney was 84 years old.
